In Asia Formula Renault’s first race weekend at the famous Sepang International F1 Circuit since
2008, PS Racing enjoyed fantastic results which have propelled it to the top of the standings in
the AFR 2014 Championship.
In Friday morning’s 10:20am qualifying under hot and sunny conditions, PSR team and
Multichannel/Cask 88/Brain Tumor Foundation for Children driver Maxx Ebenal of Canada
dominated qualifying by taking the two fastest laps of the session, propelling him to pole position
for both Friday afternoon’s Race 1 and Saturday afternoon’s Race 2. The highly talented PS
Racing team and MotorsportPlayground.com driver Abelardo Cuellar of Mexico took a fantastic 3rd
in qualifying, with Guillaume Cunnington 5th overall and a stellar four seconds ahead in the
Master’s Class division.
In Friday afternoon’s Race 1 at 4:30pm, despite the threat of rain the event took place under hot
and dry conditions. At the race start, Ebenal dropped behind P2 driver Kimi Chin and Cuellar, as
Cuellar closed up just behind Chin – until Chin made contact with Cuellar, dropping Cuellar back
while Ebenal passed both drivers to take a commanding lead for the remainder of the race.
Cuellar fought his way back up to finish 4th overall and 3rd in International Class, setting the
fastest laptime of the race in the process. Meanwhile, Guillaume Cunnington spun in the
challenging high-speed corner 12, but despite falling back several positions fought his way back
up the field to take his third Victory in the Master’s Class out of the three AFR races so far in
2014, with Master’s Class teammate Sebastien Mailleux taking the final spot on the podium in the
Masters class for the race. PSR’s Neric Wei put on a strong show by moving from 8th position in
qualifying to finish 5th overall, placing 2nd in the Asian Class.
On Saturday afternoons Race Two/Round 4 of the 2014 AFR Championship, again held under hot
and dry conditions, Ebenal took victory in the International Class with Mexican Abelardo Cuellar
2nd, which puts them 1st and 2nd, respectively, in the Asia Formula Renault 2014 Championship,
while PS Racing’s Neric Wei moved up to 5th overall and took a 2nd place trophy in AFR’s Asian
Class. Guillaume Cunnington took a stunning 4th Masters win of 4 AFR races so far in 2014.
Sunday afternoon’s Race Three/Round 5 brought Maxx Ebenal 2nd overall but 1st in the
International Class, earning him a hat trick with 3 International Class victories of the three races
of the weekend. Cuellar took 9th overall but 3rd in International Class, while Guillaume Cunnington
received a drive-through penalty for crossing the pit exit white line to avoid another driver.
Despite the drive-though penalty dropping him far back, Cunnington fought his way back to finish
3rd in the Master’s Class Masters Class, an amazing 4th podium out of 4 AFR races, which was no
surprise after he out qualified Formula Renault UK Champion/GP3 and F3 driver Alice Powell.
Cunnington is now dominating the Masters Class in his debut AFR season, while Ebenal has a
commanding lead in the overall Drivers Standings, with Abelardo Cuellar currently 2nd in points.
